Here's some news you can use!

The following information is broken down by taxpayer situation in Texas.  Refer to the state taxing authority in all governing states.  States have different policies.

TX Sales and Use Tax Return Filing Deadlines

Currently, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has NOT extended deadlines to file your monthly sales and use tax returns.  Plan to file them on time.   The decision not to extend the filing dates may change as we move forward.  Other states have granted extensions.  Check with any pertinent jurisdiction.

Taxpayers Who Cannot Pay the Sales and Use (S&U) Taxes Due

For businesses that cannot pay the full amount of sales tax collected in February, the Comptroller is offering assistance.  Short-term payment agreements and, in most instances, waivers of penalty and interest are available.  Call the Enforcement Hotline at 800-252-8880 to learn more about options to stay in compliance and avoid interest and late fees on taxes due.

Taxpayers Being Audited by the Comptroller

If you are currently being audited by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, your audit is probably still moving.  Auditors are working from home.  It remains imperative that you keep track of what is going on with your audit.  Speak with your auditor if you are having difficulty producing requested information.  They can tell you about measures in place to help you with that situation.

Taxpayers with Matters in Audit Processing, i.e. the Audit is Over and You Are Waiting for A Bill

If you have a matter in Audit Processing, i.e. the auditor has completed the audit and your file is processed so that a bill is generated, that process is ongoing.  If you are looking for an audit package don't assume it isn't coming.  The Comptroller has reduced staff processing the work but the work is being processed.

As of yesterday, the deadline to file for redetermination if you don't agree with the audit result is the same.  If you have a deadline, comply with it.  If you  can't get required information because people are at home, raise that issue.  Try not to rely on mercy but we all do what we must.

If you need help, let us or someone know!  The only guaranteed way to get help is to ask for it.  We talk to people without charging.  It's our norm to give people 30 minutes.  These days, we're playing it by ear.  So don't be shy!  We're here to help.

Be safe and be well!
